Using Blockchain to save the internet, int'l ethical norms for AI and scientists create enzyme that eats plastic.
UK is taking the lead on developing international ethical norms for AI
As nations around the world are investing more and more in AI, UK has taken a stance to investing their resources in building an ethical framework for AI. Looks like a smart move since the nations that are investing in AI are trailing ahead in terms of $$ invested – the US leads the pack with over $18.2 Billion, China with $2.6 Billion with France recently announcing an investment of nearly $1.8 Billion. The new framework will bring together universities, authors and prestigious institutions like the BBC.
Scientists accidentally created a mutant enzyme that can eat plastic bottles
The new research was spurred by the discovery in 2016 of the first bacterium that had naturally evolved to eat plastic, at a waste dump in Japan. Scientists have now revealed the detailed structure of the crucial enzyme produced by the bug. The environmentalist in me is happy since I know that it is the main cause of pollution in oceans and takes millions of years to break it down. This enzyme will help with the pollution by reducing the time to break plastic down especially when produced at scale.
